AMDG. Kolbe celebrated its class of 2023 in person in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 25, 2023. During the commencement ceremony, four individuals spoke: two graduating seniors, Ellen Foreman and Peter Prudlo; faculty member Dr. Carl Hasler; and keynote speaker, University of Dallas President Dr. Jonathan Sanford. Today we bring you their speeches, recorded live during the event. Ellen reflects on the importance of progress over awards and describe the concept of ikigai as the reason for being. Peter describes the pursuit of knowledge in service to God, not ourselves, and includes special shout-outs to fellow students and teachers. Dr. Hasler emphasizes that all of us are called to be saints and that thinking is the best way to travel. And Dr. Sanford challenges graduates and other listeners to reflect on two questions--where have you been and where are you going—while highlighting five virtues to carry into the future: gratitude, docility, humility, magnanimity, and compassion.

157 Renewal, Revival, Variety, and Unity with Patrick Reilly
Wednesday May 31, 2023
Wednesday May 31, 2023
AMDG. Patrick Reilly of the Cardinal Newman Society rejoins us to discuss renewal and reform in Catholic education during the 30th anniversary year of the Newman Guide. He describes the aspects of competition and emulation he sees in Catholic schools, examples of God’s providence at work, and the missing foundation in most secular education. He also shares with enthusiasm the ideas that everything in nature has a cyclical effect and the four pillars of his taskforce for Eucharistic education: literacy, liturgy, devotion, and living. Listen through the end for pragmatic thoughts on dual enrollment and demonstrating college readiness.

Wednesday May 17, 2023
Wednesday May 17, 2023
AMDG. Students interested in potential military service after their homeschooling days may wonder what qualities they bring from their Kolbe education and what experiences await in the armed forces. In this first episode of a two-part series on military service, Krysten Pizzurro and Jon Bates speak of their experience in the Coast Guard and Army, respectively. Jon describes military service as both problem-rich and opportunity-rich, Krysten describes benefits of military training, and both describe the opportunities available for students who are willing to tackle big questions with physical and intellectual strength. They also touch on how the military is historically informed and what practicing your faith looks like during military service.

153 How Diversity Relates to Humanity with Adam Seagrave
Wednesday May 03, 2023
Wednesday May 03, 2023
AMDG. Our Catholic identity puts us in touch with the deepest questions and truths of our existence, particularly the truth that every single human being is formed in the image and likeness of God. Kolbe alumnus and current Arizona State University professor Adam Seagrave, Ph.D—a graduate of Notre Dame and Thomas Aquinas College—joins Bonnie and Steven today to discuss his expertise in race and American history. Dr. Seagrave describes how the struggle to abolish slavery and overcome racism are an important and illuminating key factor in understanding what it means to be an American; how there has been a change from problematic neglect of history to problematic ways of teaching history in recent times; and how a Catholic understanding of the dynamic between fall and redemption provides resources to process past injustices. Also listen for his take on critical race theory, W.E.B. Du Bois’ connection with the classics, and advice for hesitant parents.
Find out more about Adam and his work with the Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism and his Race and the American Story project here.
